Saint Louis University is a Jesuit, Catholic university ranked among the top research institutions in the nation. The University fosters the intellectual and character development of 11,000 students on campuses in St. Louis and Madrid, Spain. Founded in 1818, it is the oldest university west of the Mississippi and the second oldest Jesuit university in the United States. SLU at a Glance Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Saint Louis University is ranked among the top 50 national, doctoral universities on U.S. News and World Report’s “Great Schools at Great Prices List.” SLU is one of the area’s largest employers with 6,237 faculty and staff members. The physical plant of the University consists of 151 buildings on 300 acres. During 2001-2002, SLU awarded 2,712 degrees, including 1,563 bachelor’s degrees, 622 master’s degrees, 355 professional degrees, 110 doctorates and 62 certificates. Top-Notch Teaching Saint Louis University boasts nearly 3,000 outstanding faculty members, with 96.4 percent of full-time faculty members holding a terminal degree. SLU offers inquiry courses through the Project SLU2000 initiative that feature small class sizes and unique learning experiences. In fact, the average class size is 21, and the student-to-teacher ratio is 12-1. More than 40 Jesuits live, teach and minister at Saint Louis University, which boasts 38 endowed chairs and nine named professorships. SLU offers more than 95 academic programs in the arts and sciences, graduate school, philosophy and letters, engineering and aviation, business, the allied health professions, law, medicine, nursing, social service, public health, professional studies and public service. Character Development SLU has been recognized as a character-building college by The Templeton Guide: Colleges that Encourage Character Development. Dedicated to forming “women and men for others,” the University received a $1.93 million grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc. for a project that will encourage students to reflect on faith and value commitments, as well as service to others, when choosing careers. During 2001, University students, faculty and staff contributed 489,505 community service hours to organizations, groups and individuals. Annually during spring break, approximately 150 students spend a week serving the poor and marginalized at more than 15 locations around the country and in Mexico, Ireland and Puerto Rico. Life at SLU More than 100 student organizations are chartered by the Student Government Association, including service, honorary and social fraternities and sororities, and special interest groups. The University offers several amenities, including an 81,500-square foot recreation center, an expanding student and alumni center, an on-campus hotel and several art galleries.
