Billiken Men Shatter 800-Free Relay Record

Feb. 20, 2008

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Three of Saint Louis' four relays posted season-best performances on the opening day of the 2008 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships at Flickinger Aquatic Center on Wednesday evening. The Billikens' top performance came from the men's 800-free relay squad which shattered the school record for the second time this season.

Brad Byars, Adam Trafton, Kevin Parker and Michael Dahle combined to trim the school record in the 800 free relay by nearly five seconds with an eighth-place effort of 6:52.66. SLU had eclipsed the record against South Dakota State on Jan. 18 with a time of 6:57.37.

The men's 200 medley relay comprised of Parker, Sal Cruz, Stephen Sheridan and B.J. Sayre finished ninth (1:36.84); however, it was the Billikens' second-fastest performance of the season.

Saint Louis' women posted season-best efforts in both the 200 medley and 800 free relays. Lindsey Tamkun, Elena Ramirez, Sarah Bennet and Erin Carlyle turned in the fifth-best effort in Billiken annals in the 200 medley relay (1:49.13), though they finished 10th in the race.

Then Katie Robertson, Jordan Hagar, Bennet and Jessica Schwarz finished 10th in the 800 free relay. Their time of 7:46.60 ranks third on SLU's all-time charts.

The Billiken men enter the second day of competition in a tie for eighth place with 40 points. Meanwhile, the women's team sits in 10th place with 28 points.

SLU returns to action tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. (CT). The first event in the preliminary round is the 500 freestyle. Finals will begin at 5:30 p.m. (CT).
