Parker Eclipses 100-Back Standard Twice

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Saint Louis' Kevin Parker broke the school record in the 100-back prelims (51.90), and eclipsed the mark again with a fourth-place time of 51.67 in the finals on the third day of competition at the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. Parker then teamed with Sal Cruz, Stephen Sheridan and Brad Byars to shatter the school record in the 400 medley relay (3:28.16). On the women's side, Elena Ramirez clocked the seventh-fastest 100-fly performance in school history but it was not enough to capture her third-straight 100-fly title as she finished fourth. Sarah Bennet, who also qualified for the championship finals in the 100 fly, finished sixth with a time of 58.16, which ranks 10th in the Billiken record book. Byars was the final Billiken to qualify for the championship finals after finishing fourth in the 100-fly prelims (51.02). His time ties for second in the Billiken record book. In the finals, Byars placed eighth (51.61) with the sixth-best time in school history. Michael Dahle and Justin Breithaupt each qualified for the consolation finals in the 400 IM. Dahle, who won the consolation final, turned in the second-best performance in school history (4:07.45) after finishing ninth in the prelims with the third-fastest time (4:10.06). Breithaupt placed 11th in the finals (4:11.05) with the fifth-fastest time at SLU following a 12th-place effort in the prelims (4:12.87).
In the women's 100 back, Lindsey Tamkun posted a time of 58.98 in the prelims to move on to the consolation finals. She then clocked a 58.84, which ranks sixth in the Billiken record book, in the finals. Then Tamkun, Ramirez, Bennet and Jordan Hagar combined to clock the third-fastest time in school history in the 400 medley relay (3:57.76). In the 100 breast prelims, Sal Cruz posted the second-fastest time ever by a SLU swimmer (59.47). Cruz's 15th-place time was just .04 seconds off the school record. He then finished 16th in the consolation finals (1:00.15). Adam Trafton also moved on the consolation finals with a 15th-place effort (1:43.97) in the 200 free. In the finals, he placed 16th with a time of 1:44.58. The Billiken men enter the final day of competition in eighth place with 152 points while the women are in 10th with 133 points. |
