Saint Louis Hands Out Senior Student-Athlete Awards

ST. LOUIS - Three Saint Louis student-athletes and a student athletic trainer were recognized for outstanding accomplishments at the annual Senior Student-Athlete Awards Banquet held recently at Chaifetz Arena.

Brad Byars (Marion, Ill./Marion) of the swimming and diving team was named SLU's Male Student-Athlete of the Year, and soccer player Liz Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) earned Female Student-Athlete of the Year accolades. Byars collected Atlantic 10 Conference men's swimming Student-Athlete of the Year laurels and was the A-10 100-meter freestyle champion. Fox was selected to the All-Conference first team, the Soccer Buzz All-Central Region third team and the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District VII first team.

Amanda Hellberg (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) of the tennis team was honored as Most Inspirational Student-Athlete of the Year. Hellberg helped lead the Bills to 11 regular-season wins this season and ascended into the top five on SLU's career singles and doubles victories lists.

Steve Nagel (St. Louis, Mo./SLUH) of the student athletic training staff received the Spirit Group/Athletic Training Award. Nagel has worked with almost every Billiken sport in addition to his involvement in several other SLU organizations.

The awards are based on academic achievement, athletic accomplishment and community service.
