Martin Hutton, SLU's starting goalkeeper from 2002 to 2004, enters his first season on the Billikens coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach. He returns to his alma mater after spending two years in MLS.
"To have a goalkeeper coach on campus everyday will put our keepers in a position to develop and become better players," Donigan said. "Since joining the professional ranks after his SLU career, Martin has grown as a player, and I expect him to transition into a great coach."
"It is going to be a great experience to be a part of this coaching staff," Hutton said. "I look forward to taking what I have learned through my playing career and translating that to our keepers to help elevate their games. My goal is to not only work with the keepers on a daily basis to improve their skill set, but I also want to help prepare them mentally for training and game action in their quest to become top-tier keepers."
Hutton joined the Billikens in 2002 after spending two seasons at Clemson. He took a redshirt season in 2000, and during his freshman year he appeared in five games for the Tigers.
After transferring to SLU, he quickly established himself as the starting goalkeeper. During his sophomore season, he played in all 21 games and helped the Billikens to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Conference USA third-team All-Conference selection posted a 0.81 GAA and collected a 15-4-1 record. Both his wins and GAA rank among SLU's top 10 all-time.
Hutton validated his strong sophomore campaign with an equally impressive junior season. He posted a 1.14 GAA and posted a 13-3-3 ledger in helping the Billikens reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. For his effort, he was named third-team NSCAA All-Midwest Region and collected second-team All-Conference plaudits from C-USA. He went 4-4-1 with a 1.30 GAA during his senior year after missing the first six games of the season following abdominal surgery during the summer.
Hutton was a three-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient, an honor bestowed on student-athletes who maintained a cumulative GPA above 3.0.
After graduating from SLU with a business degree in 2005, Hutton was signed by MLS' Kansas City Wizards. He was later traded to the Houston Dynamo, where he spent the 2006 season before deciding to come back to SLU in pursuit of an MBA and coaching career.
Hutton joins a coaching staff that already includes assistant coaches Matt Tutton and Dave Beck. In addition, U.S. National Team assistant coach Mike Sorber serves as a volunteer assistant on the staff.
