MONROEVILLE, Pa. - Senior Marcus Fadul (Campinas, Brazil / Lindenwood Univ.) and junior Adam Reeb (Belleville, Ill. / Althoff Catholic) won a tiebreaker at No. 3 to give Saint Louis the doubles point, and the Billikens went on to defeat Saint Joseph's 4-0 on Friday in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship at Club 4 Life.

Saint Louis (9-9), the No. 10 seed, was the only lower seed to post a first-round victory. The Billikens will meet No. 2 Xavier, which received a first-round bye, in a quarterfinals match at 4 p.m. (CT) Friday. Saint Joseph's (5-13), the No. 7 seed, will face La Salle in the consolation bracket Saturday morning.

Sophomore P.J. Hendrie (New Braunfels, Texas / New Braunfels) and junior Sean McManus (Berryton, Kan. / Hayden) cruised past Phil Garabedian and Patrick Cerutti 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, while Pat Adams and Will Pearson edged seniors Felipe Acosta (Bogota, Colombia / Colegio Andino) and Paul Feder (Belleville, Ill. / Belleville East) 8-6 at No. 1. Fadul and Reeb came through with a 9-8 (8-6) triumph over Nick Tuxen and Michael Stauble at No. 3, giving SLU the doubles point and momentum heading into singles play.

The Billikens earned three decisive singles victories to clinch the match. Fadul beat Cerutti 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4, sophomore Sam McSpadden (Little Rock, Ark. / East Carolina Univ.) downed Matt Prusack 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 and Feder was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Brian Costello at No. 6.
 

 

In unfinished singles action, Acosta led Adams 6-3, 3-2 at No. 1, Garabedian led Hendrie 7-6, 3-2 at No. 2 and McManus led Tuxen 6-1, 3-3 at No. 3.
