Xavier Bumps Bills From Championship Bracket

MONROEVILLE, Pa. - Second-seeded Xavier posted a 4-0 victory over No. 10 Saint Louis Friday in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship at Club 4 Life, dropping the Billikens to the consolation bracket.

Saint Louis (9-10), a 4-0 first-round winner over No. 7 Saint Joseph's, will face No. 6 Richmond Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT). The SLU-Richmond winner will take on the Rhode Island-Duquesne winner for fifth place Sunday at 7 a.m. (CT) Sunday, while the two losers will vie for seventh place at the same time. Xavier meets No. 3 Charlotte in the championship semifinals.

Xavier (14-8) claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Doug Matthews and Chris Herrlinger beat seniors Felipe Acosta (Bogota, Colombia / Colegio Andino) and Paul Feder (Belleville, Ill. / Belleville East) 8-4 at No. 1, while Ra'ees Ismail and J.T. Torbeck defeated sophomore P.J. Hendrie (New Braunfels, Texas / New Braunfels) and junior Sean McManus (Berryton, Kan. / Hayden) 8-5 at No. 2. Senior Marcus Fadul (Campinas, Brazil / Lindenwood Univ.) and junior Adam Reeb (Belleville, Ill. / Althoff Catholic) led Anthony Palmenter and Brian Starr 5-3 when their No. 3 contest was halted.

In singles, Hendrie battled Herrlinger at No. 2 before falling 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Matthews downed Acosta 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, and Ismail prevailed over McManus 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 to secure the victory for the Musketeers.
 

 

In unfinished singles matches, Torbeck led Fadul 6-3, 5-1 at No. 4, sophomore Sam McSpadden (Little Rock, Ark. / East Carolina Univ.) led Brian Schubert 7-5, 5-5 at No. 5 and Mike Dieciuc led Feder 7-6 (7-3), 2-2 at No. 6.
