UMass Holds Off Billikens 1-0

Oct. 19, 2007

Final Stats

Fenton, Mo. - Massachusetts' Lauren Gillespie scored three minutes into the game, and the Minutewomen held off Saint Louis 1-0 in Atlantic 10 field hockey play on Friday at the Anheuser-Busch Center. The game saw each team have a goal waved off.

Gillespie took the first shot of the game for UMass, but it was kicked aside by Billiken keeper Amy Wasserman. However, the ball bounced back out to Gillespie who turned and tucked the rebound into the SLU goal just 2:54 into the game. Late in the first half, the Minutewomen appeared to take a 2-0, but the goal was disallowed as UMass settled for a one-goal lead at the break.

The Minutewomen put 11 shots on goal in each half, but Wasserman, who had 14 saves on the day, was brilliant in goal and kept UMass from pulling away. Her best save of the day came on a point blank shot out in front by UMass' leading scorer Cher King midway through the second half. The Billikens pressed forward in the second half in search of the equalizer. SLU put five shots on goal in the second period.

With under three minutes left in the game, the Billikens earned a penalty corner. Alex Weber started the sequence with Jacklyn McGranahan stopping the ball to set up Ashlea Hibshman. The junior blistered a low shot into the UMass cage for the game-tying goal. However, during a time out after the game restarted, the score was waved off. The Billikens had one more solid scoring chance late, but Becky Letourneau kept SLU off the board to preserve the win for UMass.

The Billikens fall to 3-14 overall, 1-4 in the A-10. The Minutewomen are tied for the league lead at 4-1 and are 9-7 overall. The Billikens host Rhode Island on Sunday, Oct. 21, on Senior Day. SLU will honor four seniors before the 1 p.m. game.
