Billikens Run Past Rams 3-0
Oct. 21, 2007 Fenton, Mo. - Tallies by seniors Natalie Slyman and Catherine Donovan helped Saint Louis reach a season high in goals during a 3-0 field hockey victory over Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 action on Sunday at the Anheuser-Busch Center. The game was the final home contest this season for the Billikens. "It was great to see Catherine Donovan and Natalie Slyman score goals on Senior Day," Billiken head coach Marice Boyer said. "We did a good job of possessing the ball, creating good scoring opportunities and we finished our chances. This was a nice way to end our home season." The Billikens nearly scored in the first five minutes of the game when Alex Weber ran down a long pass, deked Rhode Island keeper MJ Britt, and slid the ball towards the URI cage. However, Meghan Daly made a tremendous defensive save on the line to keep the Billikens off the scoreboard. In the 18th minute, the Billikens jumped on top. Molly Boyne began the sequence with a blast that Britt saved. The rebound came out to Slyman who pounded the ball home for a 1-0 Billiken lead. A little over seven minutes later, the Billikens struck again with Slyman making the key pass. The senior pushed the ball forward into the Rams' circle, and Kelsey Shultz dove for the ball and hit a low, driving shot into the left side of the Rhode Island goal. The Billikens applied consistent pressure in the Rhode Island end of the field and ended the first half with 17 shots and a 2-0 lead at the break. The Billikens kept up the pressure and tallied their season-high third goal of the season. SLU earned a penalty corner, and Shultz began the offensive attack. Christine Frampus stopped the ball and pushed it towards Jacklyn McGranahan who lauched a sizzling shot. Donovan came in from the left side and tipped the ball high into the URI cage for a 3-0 lead at the 63:04 mark. Fellow senior Amy Wasserman came up with 11 saves to post her 10th career shutout. The Billikens carried the play and earned 10 penalty corners while Rhode Island did not have any.
The Billikens up their mark to 4-14 overall, 2-4 in the A-10. The Rams drop to 7-8 overall, 1-5 in the conference. The Billikens close out the regular season on Sunday, Oct. 28, when they play at Richmond. |
