ST. LOUIS - Senior midfielder Mary Green (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) was named Most Valuable Player, and four other players were recognized for their accomplishments at the Saint Louis women's soccer annual awards banquet. Senior forward Cassi Winchell (St. Louis, Mo./Howell Central) was selected Offensive Player of the Year, while senior back Liz Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) received Defensive Player of the Year plaudits. Junior back Lauren Olson (Plano, Texas/Ursuline) earned the 110 Percent Award, and sophomore midfielder Susan Frederickson (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's) was named Newcomer of the Year. Green started all 18 Billiken games this season and tallied two goals and an assist. She was named MVP of SLU's Toys for Tots Tournament, an honor that led to TopDrawerSoccer.com College Team of the Week honors. Green was chosen to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team for a second consecutive year and was selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District VII second team. She registered the game-winning goal in SLU's 1-0, double-overtime victory over Army and also found the back of the net to help the Billikens down St. Bonaventure 2-0. Winchell led the Bills with six goals, 14 points, 53 total shots and 28 shots on goal despite missing three games. Her point total included a goal in a 2-0 win over Richmond, goals in 1-1 ties at Temple and Dayton and two assists in a 2-0 victory at La Salle. Winchell concluded her career with 29 goals and 72 points to rank second and fifth, respectively, on the SLU all-time lists.
Fox and Olson were key components of a Saint Louis back line that allowed just eight goals in 11 A-10 games. Fox was selected to the All-Conference first team, the Soccer Buzz All-Central Region third team, the Toys for Tots All-Tournament team and the CoSIDA Academic All-District VII first team. She tallied an assist on the game-winning goal in the Bills' 1-0 win at Missouri State. Olson was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VII first team and represented the Billikens on the Academic All-Conference team. A starter in every game, she assisted on the game-winning goal in the Bills' 2-1, double-overtime triumph over Rhode Island. Frederickson started every game and recorded 21 total shots and 10 shots on goal. A selection to the Toys for Tots All-Tournament team, she fired a career-high six shots, including five on goal, against Army and chalked up four shots against Dayton in the A-10 Championship. Saint Louis posted a 10-6-2 record (7-2-2 Atlantic 10) in 2007, giving the Billiken program at least 10 victories for the 10th time in its 12-year history. The Billikens have made two NCAA Tournament appearances, won three regular-season conference championships and captured two conference tournament crowns. |
