Billikens Conclude Season with 10 Wins
Nov. 12, 2007
A Tough Way to Go Out: Saint Louis women's soccer (10-6-2 overall, 7-2-2 Atlantic 10) saw its 2007 campaign conclude in heartbreaking fashion last Thursday, falling to Dayton 2-1 in overtime in an A-10 Championship first-round game. Cassi Winchell, with an assist from Julia Bradenberg, netted the Billiken goal. It was her team-leading sixth goal of the season and the 29th of her career, giving her sole possession of second place on the SLU all-time list. Now for the Good News: The Billikens finished with a 10-6-2 overall record, giving the program at least 10 victories for the 10th time in its 12-year history. Next year, SLU will return players who accounted for 68 percent of the goals and 69 percent of the assists scored this season, plus its top two goalkeepers. Also, players who made 74 percent of the starts on this year's squad will be back in 2008. A Coaching Champion: Head coach Tim Champion concluded his 12th season at the Billiken helm with a SLU record of 148-73-22 (.654) and a 15-year career mark of 208-87-25 (.689). Champion has built a tradition of success as the only coach the Billikens have known. He has led his teams to three conference regular-season championships and two conference tournament titles. He became the first head coach of a SLU women's team to reach the NCAA Tournament. Champion's career winning percentage ranks 19th all-time among coaches with at least 10 years as an NCAA Division I head coach. The number is 21st in the nation among active coaches with at least five years at the Division I level. Hermann Stadium: The women's soccer program has proven difficult to overcome on Robert R. Hermann Stadium's state-of-the-art natural grass. Since the facility re-opened in 1999, the Billikens have posted a 69-17-3 (.792) record at home, including a 39-6-2 (.851) mark in conference play. SLU was undefeated in the 2006 regular season at home, yielding just one tie to then-nationally ranked Marquette before falling to Illinois in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Billikens played a stretch of 18 games without a home loss, beginning Sept. 16, 2005, and running through an NCAA Tournament first-round win over Drake on Nov. 10, 2006.
Climbing the Career Charts: Senior forward Cassi Winchell finished her Saint Louis tenure with 29 career goals, a number that places her second on the all-time Billiken list.
