Billikens Finish Third at Purdue Spring Tournament

April 16, 2008

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Saint Louis avenged its 2006 NCAA Volleyball Tournament loss to Purdue with a win over the Boilermakers at the Purdue Spring Tournament last weekend en route to a third-place finish overall in its first spring action of the year.

The Billikens, who finished 23-7 overall and 10-3 in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 2007, defeated Purdue, 2-1, and Indiana State, 2-1, in their pool to advance to the first-place bracket. SLU, which fell to both Ohio State and Valparaiso 2-0, ultimately finished third in the nine-team tournament behind the Buckeyes (first) and the Crusaders (second).

"Our team played well for it being our first tournament of the spring," SLU head coach Anne Kordes said. "Whitney Roth did a great job running the offense, and Megan Boken stepped up on the outside. The Purdue win was big since they beat us in the NCAA Tournament in 2006."

This weekend, the Billikens return to action at the 24-team College Invitational at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill., where Louisville and Albany will join SLU in Pool D.
